Sport in brief
Rafael Nadal is hoping to address issues in his game that contributed to a shock Italian Open defeat just a week out from the start of the French Open. The 12-time Roland Garros champion fell to a 6-2, 7-5 quarter-final loss against Argentine Diego Schwartzman. Nadal said: “I’ll go back home and then see what’s going on. I did my job here. I did a couple of things well and other things bad.” In the women’s event, Simona Halep reached a third Italian Open final with a hard-fought win over Garbine Muguruza. There was little to separate the two former French Open winners as Halep triumphed 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in front of 1,000 fans at the Foro Italico. Halep, who lost in the 2017 and 2018 finals, will face Karolina Pliskova in today’s showpiece.
Shaheen Afridi posted sensational figures of six for 19 to help Hampshire finish the Vitality Blast with a 20-run triumph over Middlesex. With Hampshire restricted to 141 for nine, the visitors looked on course for victory until a crazy spell in which the Pakistan bowler claimed four wickets in four balls, giving him a six-wicket haul as Middlesex were dismissed for 121.
