‘Po­ten­tially dev­as­tat­ing’

Bath had been set to wel­come 1,000 fans to the Rec last night be­fore be­ing told they must face Glouces­ter be­hind closed doors less than five hours be­fore kick-off. Bath chief ex­ec­u­tive Tar­quin McDon­ald said: “The longer it goes on, the longer it runs the risk of be­ing po­ten­tially dev­as­tat­ing.

“It will vary, but 50 to 60 per cent of rev­enues come from match days. The longer that in­come doesn’t come in – plus the costs of run­ning a club and also with Covid-19 test­ing – the tougher it will be for clubs in the medium to long term.

“It be­comes very chal­leng­ing in six months’ time, when we will be half­way through the sea­son, so we are keen to get crowds back.
