Coal mining show heats up Glen Scotia’s Old Kiln

-

A GLASGOW-based Kintyre born artist’s mining show has revealed the underside of life down the pit.

Jan Nimmo has worked tirelessly since October last year to create and curate an exhibition at the Old Kiln room in Glen Scotia distillery to mark the 50th anniversary since coal miners put down their picks in 1967 and the gates closed for the last time on the Argyll Colliery.

The exhibition includes work by primary and secondary pupils, a digital presentation of collected images and a series of drawings by Jan portraying many of the colliery workers.

It represents a milestone for the Road to Drumleman community heritage project.

It began as a collaborative work involving mining families, local organisations, schools and the wider community.

Jan has delivered mining-themed creative workshops in three schools, each including former miners who gave a first-hand account of their experiences of working underground.

Jan has also led four well-attended public dropin archiving sessions.
