Boys’ Brigade’s special guest
Members of a Campbeltown youth organisation entertained Argyll and Bute’s Lord Lieutenant with some of their regular activities.
Last Friday, Boys’ Brigade leader Alister Nimmo, the man who re-formed the 1st Campbeltown Company about five years ago, welcomed Patrick Stewart MBE who, as Lord Lieutenant, represents the Queen, the patron of the organisation.
The occasion also marked the beginning of the Junior Section’s centenary year as it was formed in 1917.
The boys and girls performed a full schedule of displays, in the Lorne and Lowland Church Hall, for their distinguished guest, his wife Mary-Anne, the Reverend Philip Wallace, Jean Durnan and Irene Millar.
Some such as figure marching, the band performance, raising and lowering the Union flag and the end-of-year blessing were quite formal while others were boisterous games such as the mat run.
After the boys and girls had risked all in bag the bean bag, which consisted of running to collect bags and dump them in a bucket, a parents’ team was formed and one enthusiastic mum fell headlong and required first aid for a cut chin.
Before presenting the prizes, the Lord Lieutenant said: ‘It was a magnificent display tonight, not just technically but with great enthusiasm.
‘I will be in touch with the International Olympic Committee about the mat record to see if there should be a re-run.
‘It is clear that you enjoy being here, it is good for you and very good for us all.’
Mr Nimmo thanked the following for support and help: Lorne and Lowland Church Guild, Howdens, TSI, Caitlyn Spree, Heather Spree, Catriona Lawrie, Nathan Armstrong, Margaret Nimmo, David Lavery, Gordon Evans for help with the band and Ronnie Graham for help with the hall.
