Pipe band’s vinyl me­mories

FORTY years ago Camp­bel­town Pipe Band joined Wings in a video which flew the flag for Kin­tyre round the world.

The first tracks of the smash hit an­them Mull of Kin­tyre were laid down in Au­gust 1977 at Paul McCart­ney’s High Park stu­dio, his wife Linda and Denny Laine were also on the song’s record­ing with Camp­bel­town Pipe Band.

The 1977 Christ­mas hit, which stayed at the top of the charts for nine weeks and was the first sin­gle to sell two mil­lion copies, is still the high­est sell­ing non-char­ity record in the UK.

The an­niver­sary will be marked at a spe­cial mu­sic event to­mor­row in­clud­ing band mem­ber Jimmy McGeachy, from Aus­tralia.


Cu­rios­ity shop owner Gra­ham Pater­son is not sell­ing this Pick­wick la­bel long play­ing record of Camp­bel­town Pipe Band. He said that since Chris Blair gave it to him to put in the win­dow many cus­tomers have been at­tracted in.
