Pipe band’s vinyl memories
FORTY years ago Campbeltown Pipe Band joined Wings in a video which flew the flag for Kintyre round the world.
The first tracks of the smash hit anthem Mull of Kintyre were laid down in August 1977 at Paul McCartney’s High Park studio, his wife Linda and Denny Laine were also on the song’s recording with Campbeltown Pipe Band.
The 1977 Christmas hit, which stayed at the top of the charts for nine weeks and was the first single to sell two million copies, is still the highest selling non-charity record in the UK.
The anniversary will be marked at a special music event tomorrow including band member Jimmy McGeachy, from Australia.
Curiosity shop owner Graham Paterson is not selling this Pickwick label long playing record of Campbeltown Pipe Band. He said that since Chris Blair gave it to him to put in the window many customers have been attracted in.
