Take an in-depth look...
DO YOU FANCY going into a drained lock to see what’s usually hidden under the water? While undertaking this season’s winter stoppages, the Canal & River Trust is again holding a series of open days to allow members of the public the chance to have a peek behind the scenes.
While most dates haven’t been released yet (apart from Newark Town Lock on 7 & 8 November), the locations will include: Diglis Lock, Worcester & Birmingham; Goytre Aqueduct, Mon & Brec; Marsh Lock, Manchester Ship Canal; Kentish Road Lock, Regent’s; Stoke Bruerne Lock, Grand Union; Fall Ings Lock, Calder & Hebble; Bingley 3 Rise, Leeds & Liverpool; Stenson Lock 6, Trent & Mersey; and Lapworth Lock Flight on the Stratford Upon Avon Canal. Take a look at canalrivertrust.org.uk nearer November for more.
Meanwhile, the Trust has finalised its winter stoppage list. A number of changes since the first draft ( CB, August) will see a few more closures, but also a reduction to just two routes – the Leeds & Liverpool and Monmouthshire & Brecon – closed all winter with no Christmas opening. See our Diary on page 91 for details.
