DO YOU FANCY go­ing into a drained lock to see what’s usu­ally hid­den un­der the wa­ter? While un­der­tak­ing this sea­son’s win­ter stop­pages, the Canal & River Trust is again hold­ing a se­ries of open days to al­low mem­bers of the public the chance to have a peek be­hind the scenes.

While most dates haven’t been re­leased yet (apart from Ne­wark Town Lock on 7 & 8 Novem­ber), the lo­ca­tions will in­clude: Diglis Lock, Worces­ter & Birm­ing­ham; Goytre Aqueduct, Mon & Brec; Marsh Lock, Manch­ester Ship Canal; Ken­tish Road Lock, Re­gent’s; Stoke Bruerne Lock, Grand Union; Fall Ings Lock, Calder & Heb­ble; Bin­g­ley 3 Rise, Leeds & Liver­pool; Sten­son Lock 6, Trent & Mersey; and Lap­worth Lock Flight on the Stratford Upon Avon Canal. Mean­while, the Trust has fi­nalised its win­ter stop­page list. A num­ber of changes since the first draft ( CB, Au­gust) will see a few more clo­sures, but also a re­duc­tion to just two routes – the Leeds & Liver­pool and Mon­mouthshire & Bre­con – closed all win­ter with no Christ­mas open­ing.
