ON TOUR WITH THOMAS TELFORD
In waterways circles we know Thomas Telford for his canal work, but there was much more to him than that: he was responsible for bridges, roads, harbours, churches and more. This pictorial book follows his life and work as it took him around Britain: his early days working as a mason in London; to Shropshire where he built bridges and became involved in the Ellesmere Canal (now the Llangollen); back up to his native Scotland to build harbours and bridges and to give the country a better road network; returning to canal work with the Union and Caledonian; to Wales to completely rebuild the Holyhead Road; and finally, back to canals with the Birmingham & Liverpool Junction – today’s Shropshire Union Main Line – and improvements made to the BCN. It’s a whirlwind tour which gives us some idea of the breadth of achievements of the great engineer and architect.
