Canal Boat - - Feature -

Tolls on goods car­ried by canal were usu­ally charged per ton-mile, so it was nec­es­sary to know how many miles a boat had trav­elled and an easy way of do­ing that was by mark­ing the canal out with mile­posts. There were many dif­fer­ent de­signs – our pic­tures show Ashby and Mont­gomery styles – and some canals fea­tured half-mile and quar­ter-mile posts, too.
