FIRE DOORS

Canal Boat - - Feature -

A speciality of the Birmingham Canal Navigations, these provided the Fire Brigade with access to canal water to replenish the tanks of their fire engines. Many of the bridges had high parapets, so a door ( painted red for easy identification) was inserted to make it easier to get the hoses into the canal. Initially installed during the Second World War, they were also seen in some other cities in the past.
