Topping up the batteries blind

Canal Boat - - Back Cabin: -

I have three deep-cycle flooded batteries for domestic use. Topping up the cells with distilled water is a real pain because the batteries are tucked up under the semi-trad deck.

Is there a gadget you can pop into a cell and add water to the correct level by touch/sound without being able to see the level? I know Trojan do an automatic watering system but it is too expensive.

ARIADNE, via the CB website TONY REPLIES... RS components ( http://uk.rs-online.com) sell an automatic top-up bottle, but I have no idea how good it is. If the back deck of the boat is steel and you have side lockers, think about cutting out the section above the batteries inside the locker and replacing it with Hexagrip board so you get better access.
