Ex-Minister chairs canal MPs’ group
RICHARD BENYON, THE MP who served as Waterways Minister during the crucial changeover period between the former British Waterways and the new Canal & River Trust, has been chosen to chair the newly re-established All Party Parliamentary Group for the Waterways.
The Conservative member for Newbury was Defra minister responsible for waterways from 2010 until 2013. During this time he was heavily involved in the changes which took the waterways from nationalised industry to charitable trust in 2012.
Under parliamentary rules, the All Party Group has to be re-formed after each general election and, at its inaugural meeting, it elected Mr Benyon as its Chairman. He said he “looked forward to working with my colleagues from all parties to promote the interests of the waterways”.
The appointment has been welcomed by The Inland Waterways Association, whose National Chairman Les Etheridge (pictured, right, with Mr Benyon) said the Group had “benefited from having previous waterways ministers as Chair”.
