POCK­LING­TON WORK STARTS

Lord Hal­i­fax, pa­tron of the Pock­ling­ton Canal Amenity So­ci­ety, is seen cut­ting the cer­e­mo­nial first sod at Thorn­ton Lock as work gets un­der­way on the So­ci­ety’s £250,000 project to re­open an­other two miles of the canal. Com­ple­tion of re­pairs at Thorn­ton Lock in 2016 will be fol­lowed by work at Wal­but Lock the fol­low­ing year, with the aim of bring­ing boats to a new nav­i­ga­ble limit at Bielby in time for the east York­shire canal’s bi­cen­te­nary in 2018.
