Cycling in support

Canal Boat - - Letters - PHILIP HUNT, via email

AS AN ENTHUSIASTIC canal cyclist and avid reader of your magazine I was disappointed to pick up in your October edition an anti-cyclist mood.

Not only was there a short piece about a petition to ask Google maps to re-route cyclists from the Regent’s Canal in east London, but your correspondent John Kendrew accused cyclists of making towpaths dangerous and miserable places.

I am the first to admit that some cyclists can be inconsiderate. But, believe it or not, some boat owners are not as polite as one might wish.

Surely, though, cyclists make a positive contribution. They use the canals extensively; often along patches where active canal boats are few and far between. They are also a huge army of support for our wonderful canal system.
