A nutty problem

Canal Boat - - Letters - MIKE & JUDY BELL,

ON A RECENT trip to the Caldon we picked up a sleeping bag or an anorak on the prop but, with lots of reverse, we cleared it.

On mooring up two locks later, I lifted the weedhatch and found we were short of the nut on the end of the shaft.

We were moored outside the museum at Stoke, so where to get a new nut? I tried the Black Prince hire company and Canal & River Trust, but with no luck. We then tried the Canal Cruising Co. at Stone. Success! We now had to get there. We decided that if we did not go astern, the prop should stay on. I put a jubilee clip on the end of the shaft and we set off. After five hours and nine locks, we moored and I walked into the Canal Cruising Co. where they gave me three nuts – in case I dropped one while fitting it.

Thank you to all for your help.
