All change on CRT Council; hydro power in Yorkshire; new moorings website; Living Waterways Awards; Great Nature Watch results

NOMINATIONS HAVE CLOSED for the elected places on the Canal & River Trust’s governing national Council – and there are guaranteed to be plenty of new faces on board in 2016, with only one existing member standing for re-election.

In the case of the four private boater places, it also looks to be rather less IWA-heavy: after three of these went to Trustees of the Inland Waterways Association in 2012, only one remains ( Vaughan Welch, who has recently stood down as a Trustee) – although IWA now gets to nominate a non-elected member.

However, a surprisingly low proportion of those put forward for election have attracted the necessary number of sponsors. Of the 29 nominees standing for the boater places, barely a quarter secured the necessary ten backers. Similarly with the new place representing CRT volunteers, even with a lower threshold of five sponsors, just three out of ten qualified, while only four out of eight chasing the two places for Boating Business received enough support.

Finally, the second new seat, elected by members of the Friends of CRT, didn’t attract any candidates with five valid nominations – and may, therefore, be considered for a co-opted member of the Friends instead.

All eligible voters (which in the case of the leisure boating places means holders of long-term licences) should receive a log-in code by email or post in time for online polling, which runs from 13 November to 11 December.

The results will be announced on 13 December.
