A zero percent inflation rate is good news for boaters – because it means Canal & River Trust boat licences will not go up at all in 2016. A three-year pledge made by CRT in 2013 tied the annual increases to the rate of inflation (as measured using the previous summer’s Consumer Price Index). The Index for August 2015 was zero, which means a zero rise in licence fees for all leisure craft and business boats in April 2016. However CRT told Canal Boat that if the Index goes negative, licence rates will not actually fall: “We are committed to limiting price rises to inflation, rather than tracking the CPI.”
