FROM HUD­DER­S­FIELD COMES a fishy story – lit­er­ally – with a young an­gler com­plain­ing to the lo­cal pa­per that il­le­gal fish­er­men were drain­ing canal pounds de­lib­er­ately and steal­ing the fish. While we hope that the thefts stop and the mis­cre­ants are brought to jus­tice, it seems that they’ve got the weight of history against them. A lead­ing light from the Hud­der­s­field Canal So­ci­ety has come up with a quote from the orig­i­nal canal com­pany min­utes from 1806 not­ing that “cer­tain ill-dis­posed per­sons have at var­i­ous times lately… drawn off wa­ter from sev­eral of the Ponds upon the Canal in or­der to take fish therein and var­i­ous other depre­da­tions…” There’s noth­ing new un­der the sun – or per­haps (in Hud­der­s­field, in Novem­ber) the rain…
