Get VHF radio hire for less
A NEW VHF RADIO hire service aims to make journeys on the Thames tideway easier and safer – with reductions available for CanalBoat readers.
Under Port of London Authority regulations, craft longer than 13.7m (40ft) navigating below Brentford must carry marine band two-way VHF radio. There is an exception for organised convoys with boats in phone contact with the leaders – but even so, there’s something to be said for being able to listen to regular radio safety broadcasts yourself and call London Vessel Traffic Services ( VTS) directly in an emergency. However, the £100-plus cost may put boaters off buying a set for a single trip.
Lindon Lewis Marine is launching a radio hire service in collaboration with the PLA whose assistant harbourmaster Jonathan Beckett describes it as “a very welcome initiative”. Lindon Lewis is based at Shepperton Marina (handy for those approaching from the non-tidal Thames), where boaters can stop to pick up tide tables, and chat to staff who are familiar with the tideway.
The radio sets are offered for hire at £25 per week, with an introductory offer of £20 to CanalBoat readers – phone 01932 247427 and quote reference CBVHF16.
