IF YOU LIKE see­ing plenty of other boats about, head for the heart of the nar­row canal net­work; if you like it quiet, the Pen­nine routes might be more to your taste (at least once they’ve re-opened af­ter the floods) – ac­cord­ing to lat­est sta­tis­tics for lock us­age.

The an­nual lock­age re­port has a se­ri­ous pur­pose – help­ing the Canal & River Trust to keep an eye on pat­terns of use and pre­dict where wa­ter might run short.
