Hire fleet pops over the Pennines

Canal Boat - - News -

ONE OF THE boating businesses most affected by the flooding has moved a number of hire craft to create what it calls a ‘pop-up fleet’ on the other side of the Pennines.

Shire Cruisers, based at Sowerby Bridge, has relocated part of the fleet to a temporary base at Ashton-under-Lyne, enabling hirers to enjoy the Macclesfield and Peak Forest canals. Other craft have moved to Barnoldswick on the Leeds & Liverpool (with one-way trips available to and from Huddersfield), while some remain at Sowerby Bridge for short-break trips – with options expanding as the canals reopen.

Shire’s Nigel Stevens said: “We have been working closely with the CRT and other boatyards in the area to make the best of a very challenging situation.”
