WHARF HOUSE NARROWBOATS
PHILL AND SUE ABBOTT came to boat-building by an unusual route. Phill worked in insurance for more than 15 years, before being made redundant in the early 1990s recession and retraining as a cabinet-maker. Sue was a civil servant, working at 10 Downing Street and the office of the Commons Speaker, before taking a PhD in marketing. She teaches at Cranfield University. The couple started fitting-out boats at Braunston in 2001 and complete around two a year. They soon took over the neighbouring building and opened a chandlery.
The boat they took to the Crick show last year had electric propulsion and they’re building another at the moment, but this one has even more features such as a forward steering position for the owner, who is disabled, and a couple of reversing cameras.
