When hot is ‘too hot’

Canal Boat - - Back Cabin: - TONY REPLIES… ALAN FRANKLIN, via CB’s

QI have recently bought a boat built by Colecraft in 2008. I heat the water either by running the engine, or lighting the multi-fuel burner with back boiler, but the water comes out extremely hot. How can I lower the temperature?

You can buy thermostatic mixing valves that are plumbed into the hot ‘out of the calorifier’ pipe and they mix a certain amount of cold water with the hot to keep the temperature safe. They are available from plumbers’ merchants as either a fixed outlet temperature or variable, but take care to keep the water above about 55C to inhibit the growth of Legionella bacteria.
