What a load of old rubbish!
A LIST OF all the junk you’ll find if you drain an average lock has been produced by the Canal & River Trust as part of its campaign to dissuade people from using canals as rubbish tips. And, as if to back up CRT’s analysis, the annual spring cleaning season has seen volunteers all over the country hauling out all sorts of junk.
On the Birmingham Canal Navigations, the annual BCN Clean Up targeted the Walsall Canal with around 70 volunteers from different organisations combining their efforts to clear the entire eight miles from Riders Green to Walsall.
They dragged out such varied items as a vacuum cleaner, a gas barbecue, a lawnmower, an electric guitar (leading to jokes among the volunteers about ‘losing a Fender in the cut’) – and more than 40 tyres from a single bridgehole.
Meanwhile, on the Coventry Canal there was a clean up with a difference: Anker Valley Canoe Club paddled the two miles from Hartshill to Nuneaton – and filled up three open canoes with the 15 bags of rubbish they pulled out.
