JOHN MACARTNEY-FILGATE

Canal Boat - - News -

The Avon Navigation lost a link with the past when John Macartney-Filgate died aged 75 in April. Born in Birmingham, he became involved in the Stratford Canal and Upper Avon restorations as a volunteer alongside David Hutchings, moving to Stratford in the early 1970s. He ran a marine engine business, hired out narrowboats and operated trip boats on the Avon. He served as Chairman of the Upper Avon Navigation Trust and helped found the Stratford & Warwick Waterways Trust which hopes to extend navigation right up the river to Warwick.
