Lift for a swingbridge

RIVER WEAVER

Canal Boat - - News -

THE 150-YEAR-OLD swingbridge which carries a popular footpath across Vale Royal Locks on the River Weaver is pictured being lifted off its bearings and onto a barge using a specially installed gantry, as the first stage of its journey by road to Yorkshire for refurbishment.

Funded jointly by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Canal & River Trust, the work will be carried out in two stages. The first part – cleaning, shot-blasting and priming – is scheduled this year; but the remaining work is as yet unfunded as a result of more urgent calls on CRT’s cash to repair the winter’s flood damage. However, all being well, repair, full repainting and reinstatement should be scheduled for 2017.

In the meantime, a temporary footbridge will maintain access across the lock.
