VACUUMING UP AQUEDUCT
Silt and debris from Smethwick’s 190 year old Engine Arm Aqueduct are pictured being sucked out by a giant ‘Hoover’ ahead of repairs to stop this Grade II listed structure leaking. Removal of 150 cubic metres of silt enables engineers from the Canal & River Trust to get in and carry out repairs. CRT’s Simon Hughes said: “Over the next few weeks we plan to install a new liner, re-point sections of the brickwork and replace any missing or badly damaged bricks and stone. The repair work should finish by the end of May.
