Staveley goes right up to the wire

Canal Boat - - News -

THE BAD NEWS on the Chesterfield is that the wet spring weather meant the Canal Trust just lost its ‘race against time’ ( see CB, June) to get the new Staveley Town Lock and Hartington Harbour in use in time for the Trailboat Festival at the end of May. But the good news is that the Festival should at least have seen the first boat pass through the lock itself.

As we went to press, the gates had been installed and the paddle gear was going in. All being well, a temporary dam will have enabled a short length of canal below the lock to be re-watered so that the Trust’s trip boat could officially open the lock during the Festival.
