AYLESBURY

Canal Boat - - Arms & Dead Ends -

Turning off the Grand Union Main Line on to the Aylesbury Arm at Marsworth Junction is a little bit like leaving the M1 for a B-road. You’ve left the widebeam long-distance trunk route and you’re on a six-mile narrow-beam backwater descending the northern slopes of the Chilterns to the old market town of Aylesbury.

The descent begins steeply, with nine locks in the first mile, the first two in the form of a staircase. But then they spread out, as the canal passes through quiet countryside to the terminal basin by the new theatre, and an easy walk to the town’s shops and pubs.
