Wheel. There, you re-join the towpath for the rest of the mile and a half of new canal built the same time as the Wheel. This continues through Scotland’s newest canal tunnel, Rough Castle, passing under a ridge of high ground, a railway, and the remains of the Roman Antonine Wall. The canal then turns sharp left, climbs a pair of staircase locks, and continues east along a hillside, crossing a road on a new aqueduct.
Not far beyond the aqueduct, there’s a slight widening where it looks like an old arm may once have joined the canal on the left.
