in­stead of strug­gling with heavy lock gates and wind­ing gear. So come on ladies, have a go. Take strength from the ‘idle women’ who took over on work­ing boats dur­ing the war, loaded and un­loaded 70 foot­ers with car­goes and kept the wa­ter­ways open.

The down­side of be­ing busy at the helm is that the cake tin suf­fers. But not this month as I have the per­fect so­lu­tion. A fridge cake. It’s also great for those hot sunny days when the last thing you want is the oven on.

A word of warn­ing though, it’s calo­rie-packed, so re­mem­ber to take some ex­er­cise be­fore you eat it if you have be­come a ‘tiller hog’ in your new work sched­ule.
