Another canal boater fatality
JUST WEEKS AFTER the fatal accident when a boater became trapped under her boat’s hull on the Macclesfield Canal in June ( CB, Sept), a second narrowboater has lost his life at a lock on the Droitwich Junction Canal. The rudder of 49-year-old liveaboard boater Allen Green’s boat was caught between the closing bottom gates of the staircase locks 4 and 5, preventing the boat rising as the
lock filled and causing it to start sinking. Mr Green climbed into the cabin repeatedly, rescuing his mother and a dog. However, on returning again in an attempt to retrieve valuables, he became trapped in the submerged craft.
Emergency services recovered Mr Green and tried to resuscitate him, but he was declared dead at the scene.
