From yachting to canal boating

Canal Boat - - News -

IT’S OFFICIAL: RATHER than give up boating, people who used to go yacht sailing turn to canal boats to get their boating fix as they get older. In new research by British Marine, 25.9 percent of canal boaters surveyed previously enjoyed yachting.

The survey also found that while the perceived cost of boating is considered a barrier for non- boaters, a lack of access or not engaging with boating as a child have an equal impact on participation.

Sixty-six percent of non-boaters gave ‘not knowing anyone who owns a boat’ as a reason for not boating; 22.2 percent said they wouldn’t know where to start and 29.6 percent put it down to not taking part in boating as a child, while 48.2 percent listed cost.

“By highlighting the importance of generational learning and outlining the key influencers and concerns of prospective boaters and boat owners, this study provides a platform for British Marine to develop a new strategy to increase boating participation in the UK,” said Howard Pridding, BM Chief Executive.
