Why you should head for the Erewash

When did you last go to the Erewash? I can almost hear a few thought processes of “where’s that, then?”... Only joking. But I have a couple of good reasons for asking the question.

First, I like it (which is, of course, reason enough on its own to go there) and secondly it has also just been revealed as the venue for next year’s IWA national get-together – and quite right, too.

Perhaps it’s because it’s a dead-end, but the Erewash often gets overlooked by boaters which is a waste. Even though it’s only 11.75 miles long, it’s a pleasant, at times beautiful, place to be – and don’t just take it from me, it provided inspiration for DH Lawrence, who was born close by.

Although it was an ‘industrial canal’ for much of its life, it’s now green and mostly peaceful and certainly not over-boated. So here’s a date for your diary; the IWA’s Festival of Water 2017 will be held at Ilkeston (on the Erewash in case you’ve forgotten) over the August Bank Holiday weekend 26-28 August.

Finally, don’t forget that we’ve just unveiled our new magazine app. Packed with 50 issues of the magazine, it’s a great way to take CB with you wherever you go. Search for Canal Boat magazine in the App Store.
