Vol­un­teer killed in restora­tion accident

A CANAL VOL­UN­TEER was fa­tally in­jured on 24 Au­gust while work­ing on a lock restora­tion project on the Wilts & Berks Canal.

Peter Konitzer, 63, from Chip­pen­ham was work­ing at the nearby Pew­sham Locks site, where he is re­ported to have been in­jured in a col­lapse. He was taken to Swin­don’s Great Western Hos­pi­tal but died of his in­juries. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust has is­sued a state­ment ex­press­ing its “deep­est con­do­lences to the fam­ily and friends of our vol­un­teer who trag­i­cally lost his life”, as well as pay­ing tribute to the emer­gency ser­vices “who re­sponded so promptly and who took such great care of all our vol­un­teers at the scene”.

The Trust is co­op­er­at­ing fully with an on­go­ing Health & Safety Ex­ec­u­tive in­ves­ti­ga­tion fol­low­ing the accident.
