Volunteer killed in restoration accident
A CANAL VOLUNTEER was fatally injured on 24 August while working on a lock restoration project on the Wilts & Berks Canal.
Peter Konitzer, 63, from Chippenham was working at the nearby Pewsham Locks site, where he is reported to have been injured in a collapse. He was taken to Swindon’s Great Western Hospital but died of his injuries. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust has issued a statement expressing its “deepest condolences to the family and friends of our volunteer who tragically lost his life”, as well as paying tribute to the emergency services “who responded so promptly and who took such great care of all our volunteers at the scene”.
The Trust is cooperating fully with an ongoing Health & Safety Executive investigation following the accident.
