I ALWAYS LOOK forward to Steve Haywood’s article, but October’s about the Environment Agency was a cracker (my mate calls them Enemy Agents). We were on the River Nene earlier this year at Alwalton Lock and I was infuriated to find that after five years the shoal has not been removed. To enter Alwalton lock from Peterborough there is just about room to get to the lock but there are so many marker buoys you don’t know which way to enter as there is no signage. After a long email to Irven Forbes (Anglian Region Waterways Manager) complaining about this he informed me that the shoal would be removed in the autumn; I replied that if it isn’t I would withhold my licence money until it is – I think it is about time more of us did this; it might just gee them into action, and what else can we do?
I agree with you wholeheartedly Steve, and have told them the same – roll on the time when the Canal & River Trust take over.
