BERKHAM­STED CAS­TLE: Cross un­der the rail­way from the tow­path near Bridge 141, and you’ll find the ru­ins of Berkham­sted Cas­tle. First built dur­ing the Nor­man Con­quest in the 11th Cen­tury and later re­built, it was aban­doned af­ter the Wars of the Roses. To­day the re­mains are open to the public daily free of charge, and a vis­i­tor room open in sum­mer con­tains a se­ries of 16 in­for­ma­tion boards telling its story.
