Tom Smith 1943 - 2016
TOM SMITH, THE man behind Evesham Marina and the former Amber Boats, has died aged 73.
Born in Cheltenham in 1943, he became a hard-working and dedicated businessman. He rose to managing director at Wakering Engineering Company, a firm involved in many sectors including engineering, garden centres, construction and land ownership – and since 2001, the development of Evesham Marina on the Warwickshire Avon. In the early 2000s he also operated the Amber Boats business, selling Polish-built narrowboats and widebeams out of the marina.
He died peacefully at his home on 25 October after suffering from heart disease for a long time. He is survived by his wife Sue, daughter Elizabeth and son Steve – who plans to continue the business with Noel Creary, another director – as well as four grandchildren.
