TOM SMITH, THE man be­hind Eve­sham Ma­rina and the for­mer Am­ber Boats, has died aged 73.

Born in Cheltenham in 1943, he be­came a hard-work­ing and ded­i­cated busi­ness­man. He rose to man­ag­ing di­rec­tor at Wak­er­ing Engi­neer­ing Com­pany, a firm in­volved in many sec­tors in­clud­ing engi­neer­ing, gar­den cen­tres, con­struc­tion and land own­er­ship – and since 2001, the de­vel­op­ment of Eve­sham Ma­rina on the War­wick­shire Avon. In the early 2000s he also op­er­ated the Am­ber Boats busi­ness, sell­ing Pol­ish-built nar­row­boats and wide­beams out of the ma­rina.

He died peace­fully at his home on 25 Oc­to­ber af­ter suf­fer­ing from heart dis­ease for a long time. He is sur­vived by his wife Sue, daugh­ter El­iz­a­beth and son Steve – who plans to con­tinue the busi­ness with Noel Creary, an­other di­rec­tor – as well as four grand­chil­dren.
