To break the ice or not?
Q With winter approaching, what are your thoughts on breaking ice in narrowboats?

A MARTIN REPLIES… Thin ice will do no more harm than scraping hull blacking. But over half an inch will start to slow you down and make steering tricky on tight bends. Much thicker and you should think about whether it will damage moored wooden or GRP boats, whether you might get stuck in the middle of nowhere, and how important your journey really is.
