Canal Boat - - Back Cabin: Experts -

Q My boat-builder usually fits a water lubricated type of stern tube, but I am more used to the traditional grease-filled stuffing type of gland and apprehensive about any possible reliability issues and ease and cost of maintenance. Do you have thoughts or suggestions?

A TONY REPLIES... Go to the makers’ websites and look up what they say about what maintenance will be required for their stern glands. Note if there’s a need to be out of the water for any maintenance and the frequency required for that. I am not convinced that rubber shaft bearings are ideal for use in muddy, gritty water.
