WE ARE sorry to have to bring you the sad news that life­long wa­ter­ways en­thu­si­ast and cham­pion of the Pock­ling­ton Canal restora­tion Sheila Nix has died, aged 96.

A mem­ber of the Pock­ling­ton Canal Amenity So­ci­ety since it was founded in 1969, she soon be­came the ed­i­tor of its mag­a­zine Dou­bleNine, and con­tin­ued in this role un­til 2005. She also served as the So­ci­ety’s sec­re­tary, helped to op­er­ate its sales stall, and was in charge of its canal cen­tre op­er­ated at Canal Head, Pock­ling­ton, on sum­mer Sun­days. She was also an ac­tive mem­ber of the In­land Wa­ter­ways As­so­ci­a­tion for over half a cen­tury (re­ceiv­ing its top award, the Cyril Styring Tro­phy, in 1993), as well as sup­port­ing other lo­cal wa­ter­ways so­ci­eties. She re­ceived the MBE for ser­vices to in­land wa­ter­ways in 2000.
