Are you really insured?

Canal Boat - - Letters - STUART TYLER, via email

I WONDER if you could help us please. Without any discussion our insurers cancelled our car insurance policy and the reason we were given was that because the car was not kept at the place of residence that we initially stated. They were not prepared to discuss if any options were available to us so we have been left marooned and not able to use our car.

We have discovered a very serious situation with the car insurance companies if you own a boat or live on one and have a car. It would appear that in certain situations your car is not insured even though you think it is.

1. Anyone who takes their boat on a cruise, takes their caravan, motor home and takes their car with them are not necessarily insured even though they think they are. This is because the car is not at the place where the car is originally kept.

The implications of this for the thousands of people who go away and do this is horrendous.

2. If you are a continuous cruiser living on a boat there are no insurance companies that we can find who will insure our car. This is because we do not have a fixed address we do however have a postal address.

As I am semi-disabled, this is extremely difficult for me because of my hospital appointments for my bronchiectasis, my back problem, so I need my car because of my health issues, I walk with a stick and can’t walk very far.

The situation is much worse than we thought, it would appear that we can only get car insurance if we go into a marina and stay there permanently.

We asked what was the length of time that we could take our car and our boat out together from our mooring or place of residence and the answer was we can’t. Their response was that because the car was away from the mooring or place of residence they could not insure us. This also applied if you wanted to travel the country in your caravan and motor home.

We are appalled at the insurance companies’ attitude and this severely restricts anyone with disabilities or limited disability like me from going anywhere.

I think this will be a shock to everyone who think they can freely travel the country.

I think there is a real case here to pursue car insurance companies to change their stance with regard to people who want to travel. We cannot see why they will allow travel insurance abroad where they allow you to travel freely and will not issue a similar type of policy to allow us to do the same in our own country.

We hope that you might be help us persuade the insurance companies to change their stance on the fundamental issue of being able to travel the waterways with our car and if possible find an insurance company who insure our car.
