BRIDGET AND STEVE POOR had perhaps the best introduction to boating we’ve ever heard. Steve was at the dentist and found a copy of Canal Boat among the magazines. When he got home, he suggested they try a hire boat holiday.
That was back in 2008, and after hiring a number of boats the couple set out on a tried and tested route to boat ownership by buying a share in a boat, along with Bridget’s sister and brother-in-law. The Crick Show became a favourite weekend and last year the couple had decided that they’d go ahead and buy a whole boat. They were initially looking for a nearly new one, but found little on the market they liked. They put an offer in for one boat, but were outbid. Then, at the last moment, they saw the Smithwood boat, and bought it.
Both Steve and Bridget have plans to stop work before retirement age – particularly as that age is creeping up all the time. Both have jobs which can be done as contract or agency workers – Steve is a technician on heavy goods vehicles, while Bridget works with people with learning disabilities. So their plan is to spend the summer months on their boat exploring the system, then get some work during the winter.
