THE ‘LANDSCAPE TRILOGY’
This is a welcome reprint of the three volumes of the autobiography of LTC ( Tom) Rolt, pioneer of the waterways revival movement. The first volume, Landscape with Machines, covers his childhood and early years in the Welsh borders, training as an engineer, running a garage specialising in vintage sports cars, and his idea of a ‘design for living’ afloat on narrowboat Cressy with his first wife Angela. Landscape with
Canals is the volume which will most interest Canal Boat readers, covering life afloat through the Second World War, the publishing of his book Narrow Boat, leading to the founding of the Inland Waterways Association and the campaign to save the waterways – but also, sadly to disagreements with other IWA pioneers, and the demise of Cressy. Finally, Landscape with Figures covers his involvement in the railway preservation movement, while making a career for himself as an author.
