KAREN AND IAN CORLESS claim to be beginners as far as boating is concerned but they’re not really. They’ve hired boats both here and in France and have been out with friends who are liveaboard continuous cruisers – so they knew what they were getting in to. Also, having made the decision to buy their own boat, they took the sensible decision to go on a helmsman’s course.
Karen, who tends to do the steering while Ian works the locks, wanted to make sure she knew some of the little tricks that can come in handy when at the tiller.
The couple have a business which exports computer parts but which they’re beginning to wind down as they approach retirement. They’re planning to spend several months a year on their boat and that will begin soon after the Crick Show.
While the boat will arrive by lorry because the Bridgewater Canal is closed until almost the end of May, they’re planning to boat back to Lancashire... probably in a very indirect route, taking in Stratford.
