BOURNE BOAT BUILDERS

Canal Boat - - The Boat Test -

Bourne is a family firm. Wayne Payton started the firm in 2004; he’s a coach painter by trade, but had also worked for other boat builders. He got into boating because his grandfather built his own boat, and Wayne used to spend summer holidays on board. Both Wayne’s sons are now involved in the firm. Daniel joined the company a few years ago after finishing university, and his brother, Ross, came on board more recently.

The company is based at Rode Heath in Cheshire, and over the years has built around forty boats. They currently do five or six full fitouts a year, and build around ten shells, some of which are sold as they are, or as sailaways.

Like last year, Bourne will have two boats at the Crick Show. As well as Grape Escape, there will be a 60ft semi-trad with a reverse layout. The major difference will be on the technical side, as it will have a Beta hybrid drive system, and thanks to the huge battery bank on board will be gas free for cooking; it will also have under floor heating.
