THE FLOAT­ING café at Lon­don’s Lit­tle Venice is pic­tured get­ting into the spirit of the Boats in Bloom awards, which were launched dur­ing Na­tional Gar­den­ing Week in April.

The awards scheme has been de­vised by the Canal & River Trust to “say thank you to the many peo­ple who bring the wa­ter­ways to life with plants and flow­ers”. From May, the Trust will be pre­sent­ing cer­tifi­cates to those on boats and on the water­side whose flow­ers “put a smile on the face of passers-by”. There will also be spe­cial prizes in cat­e­gories in­clud­ing ‘Most flower filled boat’ and ‘Most ed­i­ble grow­ing boat’, and peo­ple will be able to nom­i­nate ei­ther them­selves or oth­ers – with the clos­ing date on 31 July, a short­list pub­lished on canal river trust.

It isn’t just about mak­ing the wa­ter­ways look pretty – CRT boat­ing man­ager Matthew Sy­monds pointed out that “a pot of herbs or a planter full of veg­eta­bles can be a sus­tain­able life­style choice” – as well as flow­ers pro­vid­ing food for bees and but­ter­flies.
