THE FLOATING café at London’s Little Venice is pictured getting into the spirit of the Boats in Bloom awards, which were launched during National Gardening Week in April.
The awards scheme has been devised by the Canal & River Trust to “say thank you to the many people who bring the waterways to life with plants and flowers”. From May, the Trust will be presenting certificates to those on boats and on the waterside whose flowers “put a smile on the face of passers-by”. There will also be special prizes in categories including ‘Most flower filled boat’ and ‘Most edible growing boat’, and people will be able to nominate either themselves or others – with the closing date on 31 July, a shortlist published on canal river trust.
org.uk and an online vote for the winners. It isn’t just about making the waterways look pretty – CRT boating manager Matthew Symonds pointed out that “a pot of herbs or a planter full of vegetables can be a sustainable lifestyle choice” – as well as flowers providing food for bees and butterflies.
