Canal Shop owner jailed for as­saults

THE PRO­PRI­ETOR of a canal­side chan­dlery and a com­post­ing toi­let com­pany has been jailed for car­ry­ing out a se­ries of vi­o­lent sex­ual as­saults on el­derly women.

Richard Sail­let ( 64) and his wife ran the Canal Shop at Hill­mor­ton on the north Ox­ford Canal as well as the Eco­toi­lets com­pany. Ox­ford Crown Court heard that he had tres­passed in the homes of four pen­sion­ers to com­mit a “very dis­turb­ing se­ries of sex­ual as­saults”. De­spite ini­tially deny­ing any wrong­do­ing when ar­rested, he was linked to the crimes (which took place in the West Mid­lands, Ox­ford­shire, Northam­ton­shire and Worces­ter­shire) by DNA, car num­ber plate recog­ni­tion and mo­bile phone anal­y­sis.

Sail­let, who was de­scribed by the Crown Pros­e­cu­tor as “a cal­cu­lat­ing, ruth­less and dan­ger­ous man”, pleaded guilty and was sen­tenced to eight years in prison. The Canal Shop is now closed, as is its on­line chan­dlery op­er­a­tion.
