Canal Shop owner jailed for assaults
THE PROPRIETOR of a canalside chandlery and a composting toilet company has been jailed for carrying out a series of violent sexual assaults on elderly women.
Richard Saillet ( 64) and his wife ran the Canal Shop at Hillmorton on the north Oxford Canal as well as the Ecotoilets company. Oxford Crown Court heard that he had trespassed in the homes of four pensioners to commit a “very disturbing series of sexual assaults”. Despite initially denying any wrongdoing when arrested, he was linked to the crimes (which took place in the West Midlands, Oxfordshire, Northamtonshire and Worcestershire) by DNA, car number plate recognition and mobile phone analysis.
Saillet, who was described by the Crown Prosecutor as “a calculating, ruthless and dangerous man”, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight years in prison. The Canal Shop is now closed, as is its online chandlery operation.
