OUR PICTURES SHOW Thames tideway old hands St Pancras Cruising Club on their spring cruise from Limehouse down through the Woolwich Barrier and then back through central London to Brentford. But for narrowboaters venturing onto the river who aren’t so experienced, the Port of London Authority has come up with a set of four top Tideway tips to ensure that they and their boats are prepared for a safe journey on the sometimes fast-flowing river. The tips are: • Engines will be working harder than usual, so make sure to check filters, hoses, fuel and oil • Safety equipment is important in case things go wrong, so check navigation lights, lifejackets, and set your VHF radio to Channel 14 for London VTS or have their phone number 020 8855 0315 on your mobile • Water ingress: large waves can be encountered, so check cabin doors, engine room vents or any other openings • Information needs to be ready to hand, so check tide times, emergency mooring locations, and Thames navigation restrictions in advance.
