John Humphries, former national Chairman of the Inland Waterways Association and Chairman of the Narrow Boat Owners Club, has died. He was IWA Chairman from 1970 to 1972, following which he was appointed as a Government advisor on waterways, at a crucial time when the break-up of the then British Waterways network and its handover to the regional water authorities was seen as a real threat. A city solicitor by profession, he used his connections to invite MPs and other influential people onto his boat, to raise the profile of the waterways.
