£1m Suchet tunnel appeal on target
THE LICHFIELD CANAL restoration scheme and its patron actor David Suchet have set themselves the tough target of £1m for a new tunnel in two years – but one-third of the cash has already been raised.
The Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust’s David Suchet Tunnel Vision Appeal aims to fund a tunnel to take a restored Lichfield Canal under a railway. But the work needs to be done at the same time as a bridge is built to carry the railway over a new section of Lichfield’s bypass road: it’s only by combining the two into a single rail closure in late 2019 that the cost can be kept down to £1m. And that means the cash must be raised by spring 2019.
The good news is that in just five months since the appeal launch, £320,000 has already been raised.
